How to choose the right finish to suit your style

Unlike store bought furniture where finishing decisions have already been made for you, designing your own fitted furniture or new custom kitchen allows you to select a finish that complements your unique style and décor.

At Creative by Design, we offer our customers a broad selection of finishes to achieve their design aspirations.

Choice of a finish determines not only how the furniture looks and feels, but also its durability. Different finishes may be more durable than others, and where you use them – for example, high use wet areas such as kitchens or laundries – will influence your decisions.

At Creative by Design, we offer a 10 year warranty on our workmanship and materials. We have made it our mission to find the best quality products which are guaranteed to withstand the test of time. All of the materials we use are sourced from highly reputable producers throughout Australia, Europe and North America.

If you have been wondering what type of finish is most appropriate for your next project, here is a brief overview to help you make an informed decision…

Melamine

Melamine is a very popular finish because it is extremely durable, flexible, and easy to care for and clean. Melamine is a plastic compound that comes in sheets or boards bonded to other materials. It is available in an infinite variety of colours, patterns and textures including wood and granite which appear almost identical to their natural counterparts.

Laminate

Laminate is popular for custom fitted furniture, and in particular for benchtops because it is stain, scratch and heat resistant. It is also available in a wide variety of colours and textures, including those that appear very similar to granite, slate or wood. Laminate is thicker and manufactured differently to melamine, and comes in a roll rather than board so is a more flexible material to work with. This allows for more high-end and creative design features.

 Timber veneer

There is no disputing the beauty of real timber and timber veneer, a fabulous and cost effective alternative, provides this look in a far more sustainable way.

Timber veneer is comprised of durable board covered with a thin layer of natural timber. There is a range of timber veneer choices to compliment your style and décor. For an earthy, natural finish for your fitted furniture or cabinetry requirements, timber veneer is an ideal choice.

Paint finishes

Paint is a great way to finish your fitted furniture as there is an abundance of colour options allowing you to match décor elements from your home.

Some benefits to painting your fitted furniture are that it acts as a sealant and adds durability. Creative by Design uses the two-pac paint process which offers a professional, hard finish that is less prone to scratches and wear.

Choice is key

Making choices on the right finish can be a little overwhelming. Our experienced designers can help you navigate the multitude of colours, patterns and natural finishes available. They will guide you in making a decision that aligns with how the furniture will function and look in the space it is designed for.
